Exmar adopts Toqua’s AI fleetwide to squeeze the most out of its data

EXMAR has entered a fleetwide deal with Toqua after initial results confirmed that Toqua's AI has significant potential to optimize vessel performance to save fuel and lower emissions by leveraging EXMAR’s big data.

Intro

EXMAR recognized early in their digitalization journey the importance of not just collecting data, but also actively putting it to work. With Toqua's impressive track record of helping industry leaders maximize their data's potential, EXMAR embarked on an exciting trial project. The outstanding results from this initiative revealed a significant upside potential, leading to the enthusiastic decision to implement Toqua's technology across their entire fleet.

Where Toqua’s Tech made the difference

Traditionally, performance analysis in shipping has been based on sea trial curves, often complimented by rudimentary analysis of noon reports. This has obvious limitations [read more]. With the rise of sensor data, there’s suddenly an abundance of reliable, operational data. This provides a massive opportunity for next-generation technologies, such as Toqua’s proprietary Physics-Informed Machine Learning [read more], to overcome the limitations of traditional methods by tapping into the full potential of this big data.

The resulting models, Toqua’s Ship Kernels, are a game-changer. Ship Kernels can simulate all possible operating conditions, are continuously updating to the vessel's latest performance, and achieve an accuracy previously unthinkable, all while ensuring physical integrity.

These models and their corresponding speed-fuel numbers, are foundational to all major decisions in shipping. Making such a big leap forward in such a key area, creates improvements across many different departments. For EXMAR specifically, it is helping them with hull performance monitoring, chartering decisions, sister vessel comparisons, engine monitoring, improving voyage optimization, and much more.

The additional clarity provided by Toqua’s models in assessing paint performance, hull cleanings, engine efficiency, etc., significantly expands our operational capabilities. It really helps cut through the noise

A powerful solution that adapts to your data situation

A key advantage for EXMAR is Toqua’s ability to adapt to whatever data is available and make the most out of it. While some vessels are already collecting high-frequency sensor data, others rely solely on Noon Reports. Toqua’s ‘Ship Performance Orchestration’ [read more] ensures that the best possible model is made out of the combination of available data sources. This orchestration continuously reassesses the data situation and adjusts the modeling approach to maximize accuracy and coverage across the fleet. With Toqua, EXMAR can rest assured that their data is being utilized to its fullest potential at all times.

Toqua’s system not only adapts to the data situation but also fundamentally helps improve data quality. Ensuring data quality is crucial to unlocking the value of big data, yet it’s often overlooked. Toqua’s solution automatically detects, flags, forwards, and resolves quality issues, keeping EXMAR in control of their data investment with minimal effort. By automating data quality management, EXMAR maximizes the immediate benefits of Toqua’s AI and strengthens their data infrastructure for future AI initiatives.

And benefits your existing solutions

By embedding Toqua’s Ship Kernels within EXMAR’s existing voyage optimization solution, Exmar can now also bring the benefits of sensor data to its voyage optimization. “By embedding Toqua’s Ship Kernels into our current voyage optimization solution, we were able to increase fuel savings by up to 3%, helping us reduce total emissions even further.”, says EXMAR’s Fleet Manager, Kristof Vercammen.

With vessels on time charter, accurate speed-fuel warranties are essential. By applying Toqua's AI to our sensor data, we gain a clearer view of speed-fuel performance, allowing us to negotiate with confidence.

Refining today’s warranties, while paving the way to reimagine future warranties

A clear understanding of speed-fuel numbers is crucial for any chartering department. Toqua’s Ship Kernels provide accuracy that is 2x-4x higher than conventional methods, offering much-needed clarity. With this advantage, chartering can negotiate from a position of confidence, manage risk effectively, and capitalize on commercial opportunities.

Looking ahead, EXMAR anticipates industry practices evolving to support more innovative charter party warranties. This evolution can begin small with practical updates, like speed-fuel warranties that adapt across the dry-docking cycle to fairly and transparently reflect vessel aging. But eventually it will extend to larger changes, such as warranties that align the commercial incentives of owners and charterers in a way that both benefit financially from decarbonizing the vessel. Whatever shape these future clauses take, advanced and transparent technology to track speed-fuel performance over time will be essential to make these contractual innovations possible.

Conclusion

Adopting Toqua’s AI solution across the fleet enables EXMAR to harness the power of its big data, driving impactful improvements in operations, technical, and chartering. This fleetwide rollout not only reduces emissions and increases earnings, but also aligns with the future of the shipping industry. Data transparency and innovative warranties will reshape the ways of doing business, with large consequences for those lagging behind. With Toqua’s technology, EXMAR is poised to lead the way in setting new, forward-thinking standards for data-driven, sustainable shipping.
